Child, Teen, Family and Parenting Counseling
Everyone needs support to navigate through the fast-paced nature of life. This support system starts in the home. However, sometimes these important foundational relationships are the most difficult ones to nourish and uphold. When relationships in the family are on edge, home life can feel like it only adds to the chaos of work and outside commitments, when it should be a sanctuary of comfort.
At Crossroads, we believe in building strong foundations for healthy relationships. When continued attempts to reconcile home life aren’t successful, that can be an indicator that a professional may help you see some blind spots that you are unaware of when you’re a part of the family. That’s why we offer different types of family counseling: child counseling, teen counseling, blended family counseling, and adult child counseling. Many of our therapists utilize Emotionally Focused Family Therapy or EFFT. EFFT improves family dynamics by strengthening the bonds through the facilitation of conversations where vulnerabilities and attachment needs are expressed.
In family counseling, we actively work with parents and caregivers, children, and sometimes the whole family system to identify the root of conflict and disconnection. Family counseling can help your family build a stronger foundation based on compassion and understanding.
Child counseling is generally for families with children from ages of about 6 to 12 years old. We strongly believe in approaching child counseling from two perspectives: the strong relational bond and the balance of discipline. Finding a healthy medium between establishing an emotionally safe bond between you and your child while maintaining the ability to serve as an authority figure in the home isn’t easy. However, with the understanding and insight that family counseling can bring, it is possible. We help parents build and foster an open connection with their child, while maintaining the ability to guide, teach, discipline and challenge them positively. Read More →
Teen counseling is for teens from the ages of 13 to 19. As your child matures, it is normal for them to want more freedom and independence from you as a parent. This shift is completely natural, but the transition in home life can feel a bit turbulent. You and your teen are adjusting to different child-parent roles. Though your child is feeling the need for more independence, your role as a parent is still highly important. You can provide your child with strong guidance and structure through a loving relationship to help them navigate their steps forward in independence and maturity. We understand that this is a difficult time to navigate, which is why we offer teen counseling services. With teen counseling, we help both the parent and the teen understand the changes that are happening for both of you. Read More →
Being a parent is one of the most challenging and rewarding roles of your life. It would be very nice and convenient if your child came with an instruction manual to help you parent them. Since this is not the case, you as a parent need a roadmap to help you navigate raising your children. Read More →
Parent-child relationships are life-long relationships, even as the “child” grows in age and maturity. Sometimes there are deeply rooted issues from the childhood of a parent-child relationship that never got resolved. These ignored issues may be blocking a healthy adult parent-child relationship, which is where adult family counseling becomes valuable. With family counseling focused on a more mature pair, our Crossroads therapists help you re-visit the past hurt or pain that is interfering with your current relationship and bring reconciliation to the problem. This resolve and healing helps make room for a new, healthy parent-child relationship.
We offer online teletherapy (sometimes called video therapy) for children, teens and families. This can be very helpful especially in those situations when getting to the office may be challenging. For many teens ages 13–19, virtual therapy is the medium of choice as this is a format they are very comfortable with. Studies on the effectiveness of online therapy have shown it to be as impactful as in person therapy sessions. There are, of course, some exceptions where having your child or teen attend therapy in person is ideal. We have also found that sometimes a hybrid approach with both in person therapy sessions and online therapy sessions has been the best scenario for some families. Read More →
